I tried setting a master password, but I still can't become su. It says su: sorry. Its just something I'd like to get fixed in case I need it again.

I've tried using my admin password, but that doesn't work either.

Run system preferences. Click on Security. In there there is a master password option. If it tells you you've already got a master password, then you can click change to make it something else (you'll probably have to know the password it is before you can do this, but I don't know, as I've not tried this) but, at least this will show if you have a master password set or not.
Hope this helps.
