Ok. I got it to work. It looks like wwhat was happening is that I
can't run as root when I'm in a limited user's account. My set up is
this. I hav 3 accounts. I have an admin account an account that I
use all the ttime which is a limited user account and then a spare
account so that if something breaks, or if someone wants to see what
my mac is all about they can have a fresh account so as not to break
mine. Soo I tried logging into my admin account and it let me
become root no problems. I tried it again on my limited account and
it wouldn't let me become root. So it looks like I have to have
admin rights. I just hope my admin account doesn't die.

Ok. I was able to set a master password. but I still can't become
root. I tried what David suggested going into net info manager and
activating the root user and then setting a ppassword, but still su
doesn't work. It says su password: I type in my password and then
it says su: sorry. I'm not sure what's going on here, but its
really weird.

It says su: sorry. Its just something I'd like to get fixed in
case I need it again.
Were you able to set a Master password? If not, there is the
ability to reset this password with the Install DVD. At least
there used to be in Panther and jaguar. I haven't actually did it
in Tiger but I think it's still there. Simply startup your
machine with the Install DVD (restart it with the DVD in your
machine and right after the chime sounds, hold down the "c" key)
and wait for the first dialog. Then turn on VO and go to the
menubar and there should be a "Reset Master Password" option under
one of the menus.
If you were able to set the Master Password and you still got this
message, sorry for making you read all this.
