Using the mouse helps to go directly to an item in Safari ie across the page instead of going thru the whole list but not many other places. There are occasions that I can think of right now that the mouse simplified things. This I am told by my sighted guide. Personnaly I leave the mouse tracking off as it tends to be very jumpy and unreliable on occasion. Vickie Weir

Hi Woody,

Thanks for answering the call. I'm interested in knowing what effect the use of the mouse has on VO, good and bad. For instance, can you do things with the mouse and vo that you cannot do with vo andd the keyboard? For instance, does work differently when using the mouse on web pages than it ddoes when using the keyboard? I'm not being too clear here, bbut am trying to get at the interface issues.

Thanks!

I am fully sighted, and have been exploring VO since this last winter. I am
not a software developer. I am a Mac consultant, I am very familiar to
sighted usage. I had no prior experience with screen reading. I now
volunteer VO and Mac access instruction to the Santa Barbara Braille
Institute. I still find frustration in reading websites, but can navigate
around the computer very well.

For sighted people VO shows tracking by drawing a box around the item,
additionally we can have a window that shows the audible interface as text.
When I use VO I try to not use a mouse and stay on the keyboard.

When I become a bit more masterful with this I hope to be helpful on this list. As is, you are welcome to make use of my sight, ask and I will attempt
to explore and discover solutions.

Hi All,

Our talking interface thread which is splendid thanks to all who've
made positive and thoughtful contributions, has spawned another idea
which I'm hoping will also spawn a fine and thoughtful discussion.

I'm calling out to those Mac Folk who are not blind who use VO for
one reason or another.

We've talked about the fact that every Mac comes with VO built in.
I've run into folk who don't even know this and have gotten Macs
since VO began to appear on them. Some others say they've played
with it a bit, but What I want to look at here is how easy it can be
to test development work with VO. Are you prone to turn VO on and
point and click? If so, would this be enough? If development is
going to have any validity for folk who do not use VO but want to
test with it, VO needs to work sort of like a Sighted person who uses
the computer works. Most folk are not going to want to learn the
interface just so they can test their code.

The answer to the divide may be VO but as has been pointed out, we
aren't there yet and this I believe is partly due to the fact that we
have been on a path of rrequirement to use a different approach and
interface on all platforms and in all instances.

At any rate, if you are not a person who is blind and you use VO,
please share your thoughts? If you know someone who uses VO who is
not blind, Please invite them to share their thoughts or forward with
permission.

Thanks!
