"voice over spoke too much of the text on the screen, EG checking my emails took way too long as there was no way to stop it reading everything."
1. When VO is speaking, press the CTRL key to pause its speech. Pressing CTRL again will restart the speech or beginning navigating will simply ignore the completion of the reading process.
2. There are settings within Mail to change what is shown and thus what is read. You can eliminate the Button bar, some columns within the Messages Table and if navigating through the Messages Table you can simply press "Return" to bring up the message you wish to read and you will not have to hear the complete message table contents.
3. You can Interact with a message content area and read using VO navigation keys and therefore determine whether you need to read the whole message or simply delete it once you've determined its lack of importance.
4. If one uses the Preview Pane and the Jump command, I could see these issues being more prevelant but when you eliminate the Preview Pane and read with the arrows or Interacting with the message content, Mail is far more interactive and less cumbersome.
