Thanks tim, I'm waiting to see if any of this was tried before
giving up was done.

Hi david,
You asked for response to the following:
"voice over spoke too much of the text on the screen, EG checking my
emails took way too long as there was no way to stop it reading
everything."
1. When VO is speaking, press the CTRL key to pause its speech.
Pressing CTRL again will restart the speech or beginning navigating
will simply ignore the completion of the reading process.
2. There are settings within Mail to change what is shown and thus
what is read. You can eliminate the Button bar, some columns within
the Messages Table and if navigating through the Messages Table you
can simply press "Return" to bring up the message you wish to read
and you will not have to hear the complete message table contents.
3. You can Interact with a message content area and read using VO
navigation keys and therefore determine whether you need to read the
whole message or simply delete it once you've determined its lack of
importance.
4. If one uses the Preview Pane and the Jump command, I could see
these issues being more prevelant but when you eliminate the Preview
Pane and read with the arrows or Interacting with the message
content, Mail is far more interactive and less cumbersome.
