canoscan lide 60

In addition to my previous questions, I just found a slide switch  
with two positions on the bottom of the scanner; didn't notice them  
before because there was tape across it. Is this a power switch? If  
so, which way is on and can you hear anything that tells you if it is  
on? I do have it plugged in to my usb hub.
