Well comparing Rockbox to the stock firmware on the Ipod isn't
possible. They achieve the same ends,b ut through different means.
Rockbox will do what you want and is platform independent and
requires no additional software to accomplish its goal. If you go to
the store, purchase an Ipod, and attempt to put it in disk mode and
copy mp3s and expect the Ipod to play them, not possible. WIth
ROckbox, you can do exactly that.

So, yes the Macintosh will do what you want, copy files to the Ipod
as an external storage device. Itunes on the other hand is the only
means to copy content to the Ipod and use the Ipod's stock firmware
to play them. So the point here is that with Rockbox, again, its
platform independent, you can use windows, the Mac os, or Linux and
accomplish copying mp3s and having no need for Itunes.

Tim, you are correct, although you can copy files to the Ipod in
disk- mode, the Ipod will not see them in its database because in
order to get there, Itunes has to include it and that is the
program that controls the database.
This is the problem and if Itunes were accessible, it would make
it much easier to work with an Ipod, but of course if the Ipod
itself were accessible, it would help quite a bit. You know a
little Tiger running on it with VO would be the way to go. grin

Hi James,
If I'm understanding your question correctly then my answer is
no. The iPod does show up on your Desktop like any other
ejectable device but you cannot copy large files such as music
to it unless you put it in Disk mode. The problem with Disk
mode is that I'm pretty sure that the items you copy when in
Disk mode cannot be seen by the iPod's music player. I would
check things out further before making the investment if I were
you.
