I'm going to continue with other instructions that you may have to follow
after doing the directory rename. These also involve checking folders
under Finder, and taking the precaution of making copies of some folders.
Next instructions will come after the previous message's text.

Before logging out and into your account, you may need to take these additional
precautions. I'm assuming that you have already renamed your Home folder to
its original name For example, if your Home folder was originally johnsmith
and you changed it to john, you rename it back to johnsmith

Apple's documents say:
"When an "admin" user renames his home directory, a new, empty home directory
will be created the next time the affected user logs in. Though the original
home
directory is not being used, it is still present. This may create the false
impression
that the home directory is lost."

The MacFixit site instructions are that you may ALSO have to perform these steps

Replace the folders in your Home > Library folder with those from the Home >
Library > Library folder, as follows:
a. Open your Home > Library folder and the Home > Library > Library folder in
separate Finder windows.
b. Select all (Command-A) the folders in the Home > Library > Library folder.
c. Copy (Option-drag) the folders from the Home > Library > Library folder to
the Home > Library folder.
d. When prompted if you want to replace a folder in the Home > Library folder
with an older version from the Home > Library > Library folder, select Replace
to permit the replacement.

I don't have a second level Library folder under my Home > Library folder
This might have been created when you renamed your home directory and logged
back in. If you find this extra folder you should probably do these copies.

You can open a new Finder window with command+n. And you can switch focus among
all open Finder windows using command+` (that's command followed by the accent
key just below the escape key at the upper left of the laptop)

Perform step c. (Copy Home > Library > Library folder from one Finder window to
Home > Library Folder in another finder window)
by using command-c, cycling to the new Finder window with command+`, navigating
in
column mode to the new folder, and pasting (command-v)

They also recommend that you paste a copy of the Home > Library > Library
folder
to your Desktop as a temporary backup copy of your old library in case of a
mistake
in the previous step.

Restart your Mac

Login to your (originally named) account. For example, johnsmith in the
example given
above.

Hope this helps,

Esther

P.S. I have to leave for home. Will check back in 20-30 minutes.
