OK, I copied that from the Apple Document: 107854 Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854
I think that you only have to rename the new directory to something which is different, and which can easily distinguished. What are the two directories that you see? The top one is usually the current home directory. That could be the newly created one matching your changed name for home. You don't have to tell me the actual names -- just give me strings like "A" and "B" so we can distinguish them. When you navigate the Finder in column mode, what do you see under Users? (You've just done a VO-keys right arrow from the column where you saw Users) You can start from the beginning if you like. (Close finder with command-w and begin the process of opening up a finder window and navigating to Macintosh HD) Or, you can just go back in the structure and tell me what is there under Users.
