Shaun,
You have VoiceOver working, so first check the /Users folder for the
renamed folder
1. Bring up finder (VO-keys+d to Dock, arrow to Finder, return to
launch
Finder
2. In finder VO-keys down to the Sidebar and interact (VO-keys+shift
down
arrow)
VO-keys up arrow to "Macintosh HD"
3. Tab so you hear "Browser" and interact (VO-keys+shift down arrow)
4. VO-keys arrow down (or up) until you find the "Users" file
5. If you're not in column view, do command-3 to get into column view
You may have to interact again if your hear "Browser"
6. VO-keys right arrow to the next column. VO-keys down arrow or up
arrow
and read the entries under the /Users directory. You are checking
to
see whether
the missing home directory is present and simply renamed.
If you determine that the home directory is present but renamed, follow
these steps:
1. In Finder, go to the new home directory (your renamed folder) and
add
the
string "_new" to the new home directory's name. (You should be able
to
do this
with the "enter" key to the left of the arrow keys and type in a
new
name. Of,
you may be able to do command-i, VO-keys down arrow until you hear
"Name and Extension" and then below it "Enter Text" with the
current
name
Type in the new name with _new at the end (that's "underline"new
where
the
underline is shift-hyphen).
2. Rename the old home directory to the correct name (before you
changed
it).
3. Log out and into your account.
There are other steps you'll have to take once you've done this.

It's going to be harder because you've turned your machine on and off,
but
it's doable. Let me read through the instructions.
Here's the description of the symptoms, which match yours:
If you change the file name of your Home folder while using your
account,
it will
immediately appear as if all of your preferences, Mail, Address Book
contacts,
iCal calendars, iPhoto pictures, iTunes music, Dock customization, and
other
items have either vanished or been reset to default values.
What has happened is that a new Home > Library folder (~/Library
directory) has
been created, effectively resetting all your preferences and moving
the
data for
many of your applications -- Mail, Address Book, iCal, and others --
from
where
these applications expect to find such.

Listers I was listening to the VO MP3 tutorials and going through the
DOC, Home and VO menus. Between Mail, I Tunes and the previous
mentioned
items being opened I managed to make my system do something strange
and

desperately need your help. I was on my home folder and I interacted

getting me back on track. Also for some strange reason my default VO
voice was set back to Fred as well, but remember I was in the VO
settings. This was after the voice change prompted me to check it
out.It
