Lets take this one off list. I will await your private mail piece?

OK, I copied that from the Apple Document: 107854
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854

I think that you only have to rename the new directory to something
which is different, and which can easily distinguished.

What are the two directories that you see? The top one is usually
the current home directory. That could be the newly created one
matching your changed name for home. You don't have to tell
me the actual names -- just give me strings like "A" and "B" so we
can distinguish them.

When you navigate the Finder in column mode, what do you see
under Users? (You've just done a VO-keys right arrow from the
column where you saw Users) You can start from the beginning
if you like. (Close finder with command-w and begin the process
of opening up a finder window and navigating to Macintosh HD)
Or, you can just go back in the structure and tell me what is
there under Users.

I got to the part where I saw the renamed folder and the current one, which

No, it's OK. You can go ahead. Do you have questions about
what you read? Basically, when you renamed your home directory
and logged in again, the system created a new user directory
for you. You have to get back the old ones. In addition, I think,
it may have created a new set of library folders one level down.
You have to move them up. This may be a "maybe" in my
reading of the documents. And creation of the Library folder
again may have depended on what you did. But it wouldn't
have happened if you hadn't logged out and logged in again.

Hi,
Sorry, I'm not on Skype. But I'm back on line.

you will not be able to get back with me for a while.

Shaun,

You may have to rename other folders before logging out, so please
check back with me before doing your logout.

Shaun,

You have VoiceOver working, so first check the /Users folder for the
renamed folder

1. Bring up finder (VO-keys+d to Dock, arrow to Finder, return to
launch
   Finder
2. In finder VO-keys down to the Sidebar and interact (VO-keys+shift
down
arrow)
VO-keys up arrow to "Macintosh HD"
3. Tab so you hear "Browser" and interact (VO-keys+shift down arrow)
4. VO-keys arrow down (or up) until you find the "Users" file
5. If you're not in column view, do command-3 to get into column view
You may have to interact again if your hear "Browser"
6. VO-keys right arrow to the next column. VO-keys down arrow or up
arrow
and read the entries under the /Users directory. You are checking
to
see whether
the missing home directory is present and simply renamed.

If you determine that the home directory is present but renamed, follow
these steps:
1. In Finder, go to the new home directory (your renamed folder) and
add
the
string "_new" to the new home directory's name. (You should be able
to
do this
with the "enter" key to the left of the arrow keys and type in a
new
name. Of,
you may be able to do command-i, VO-keys down arrow until you hear
"Name and Extension" and then below it "Enter Text" with the
current
name
Type in the new name with _new at the end (that's "underline"new
where
the
    underline is shift-hyphen).
2. Rename the old home directory to the correct name (before you
changed
it).
3. Log out and into your account.

There are other steps you'll have to take once you've done this.

Let me know if you have questions about this first.

Hi Shaun,

You should not rename your home folder, but this mistake has happened
often
enough that I was able to find a web page describing how to recover.
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/renamehomerecovery.html

It's going to be harder because you've turned your machine on and off,
but
it's doable. Let me read through the instructions.

Here's the description of the symptoms, which match yours:

If you change the file name of your Home folder while using your
account,
it will
immediately appear as if all of your preferences, Mail, Address Book
contacts,
iCal calendars, iPhoto pictures, iTunes music, Dock customization, and
other
items have either vanished or been reset to default values.

What has happened is that a new Home > Library folder (~/Library
directory) has
been created, effectively resetting all your preferences and moving
the
data for
many of your applications -- Mail, Address Book, iCal, and others --
from
where
these applications expect to find such.

I'll read the instructions and post again.
