tell us more about this? how are you trying to find your applications? do you know what happened just before the change? It might be just a matter of renaming a folder. remember, pressing enter on a file or folder will put you in a mode that allows either accidentally or purposefully the renaming of that item. pressing enter or escape or tab without doing anything distructive like typing or backspacing escapes with no harm done.
