OK thanks a lot! I now have my applications. I was trying to launch them
from the Mac HD folder. ah well never mind. just another silly thing i've
done is that I have somehow managed to rename text edit as
"another silly document" no idea how i did that but if you could let me
know how to change it back I'd be greatful.

how to reset to factory settings? I am using Tiger at the moment, the
reason for resettin is that things seem to have changed and I can no
longer find applications.
