Then you don't have a modem. Apple sells a USB one.

so can anyone please tell me again how to set up dialup on my Macbook?
I tried to follow the instructions that I found online, but didn't see
the options they were mentioning. Under network, I only saw blue
tooth, ethernet and airport. The Verizon people are coming on the
13th of March, so I have some time to alternate between Comcast and
Toast.net and I'd like to be on my Mac for the latter as well.
Thanks,

You can test by simply dialing the phone with the cord plugged in.
in other
words, dial your number with another phone. If you go to system
prefs and
click the network tab, there will be a modem option there.
I want to talk more about comcast though.

Subject: Re: Dialup Modem For Macbook
Ooh, thanks! I just checked the jack on the side of my Macbook by
putting a phone chord in and it fit. I guess mine really does have a
modem! I thought it was only an ethernet. How can I check this?
This is all very good because the Comcast connection is back to it's
old tricks. So I signed up with a company called Toast.net, largely
because I can't afford Earthlink at $21.95 a month out of my own
pocket (though I loved it and had it for nine years with hardly any
problems before my family switched). Anyway, this one's only $9.95 a
month and there's no contract, so I can cancel any time. Right now,
it's choppy at best, but I've only been using it for one day and I
need to figure out if it's because of the mini blizzard we're having
or if the phone lines here are that bad because this number's had
problems even when our tennent used to use it. I've also looked at
basic-isp.net and copper.net, but both seem to be the same company,
only the former charges $6.95 a month and latter charges $3 more.
All
of these don't require software and don't have advertising. Anyway,
any good low-cost dialup providers would be welcomed. (We have
nationwide calling, so numbers aren't an issue). Also, since I think
my Mac does have the modem, anything that's especially Mac -
compatible
would be great. In the meantime, thanks for everything and maybe if
Comcast ever does start working, I'll see you all on the highspeed
end
of things again.

Hello again,
I won't even go into the problems I've been having with my Comcast
broadband internet service because it would be offtopic and the
email
would be huge. Let's just say I've completely had enough. So does
anyone know anything about using external dialup modems on the
Macbook? I know it has an ethernet one built in but that I'd
have to
buy one for dialup. I've heard that Apple makes one but that
it's not
all that good. If this is true, can I use another brand and which
one? Help would be sincerely appreciated.
