Hey Tim, thanks. I did in fact start off with general password and
then went to account. Mainly not for the lack of trust, but I have a
ten year-old in the house who really doesnt understand what happens if
he starts mucking about with others data. Just as a precaution I
choose this and also for other reasons. This could be partly my
problem although I did erase the disk before attempting to setup the
accounts. It's possible I need to start over again and this could
resolve my problems. I appreciate the input, it may very well be a
fluke thing and after updating, I should have then made the switch. As
far as the ip address, I don't know why I had thought I could use the
routers name directly, but one would assume this, but being no dns
server in the normal sense, it's no wonder it didn't work.
Let ya know how it works out when I'm finished mucking about.

Hi Scott,
SH: What should I type in to the connect to server box?
TK: I use the IP address of the Time Capsule. If yor TC is giving
out the IP Addresses then it will be 10.0.1.1 or 172.16.1.1 or
192.168.1.1 depending on how you set it up. You can tell this by
either looking in the DHCP tab of the Internet section of Airport
Utility or simply looking in the Advanced pane of your Network
System Preferences to see what kind of IP address your computer has
and the address of the router. After entering the IP, then you can
type in the username and password.
SH: Not sure if it really makes any difference as far as security
using a general password verses the account method. There's not a
lot of documentation on either method.
TK: The security there would be between sets of data. With the
general disk password, all users have access to all the data on the
TC whereas when setting it up with Accounts, the data of one user is
not normally accessible to another user. This has its advantages
and disadvantages. When in accounts, your data can't be deleted by
another user although you need to play more with permissions if you
wish to use the TC to share files between users. I haven't bothered
putting the Account level of security as I trust everyone in my
house not to do anything stupid with the data on the TC. In fact,
most of them don't even use it.
A few other things to note:
• If you changed the disk security after there was already data on
the TC, you can cause disk access issues.
• There is a Software Update that came out yesterday or the day
before for the TC and Time Machine plus a firmware update for the TC
as well.
Let me know if you're still having problems.
