I don't know about Apple's calculator, but I just found out that Maxima has scientific functions and it's text based. You can type something like sqrt(81); or solve(9*x=81);. I'm telling you, I wish I would have known about this program when I was taking those math classes. If you have Darwin ports installed, you can type "port install maxima" from the terminal.

What about scientific functions. Is there a list of key strokes for squaring something or getting the square root of something. This would be nice so I don't have to ask my math teacher to borrow the talking scientific calculator all of the time.

I've been thinking it doesn't work, but that's because vo doesn't seem to speak in that box for me. When I just did 2+2 to test it it worked
fine, but my accuracy isn't always very good, and when I try to make
corrections things go wrong.

Yeh, when I make corrections everything disappears from the box or
maybe just the last number I typed will be there. It's a bit odd. I
don't really mind hitting the buttons, but if there's a better
solution to be had it might be nifty to play.

best,

Orin, you can indeed just type the numbers. I think you have to be
focussed on the display area, but that's where you start when you
open up the calculator.

Hey all,

Does anyone know where I can get a Calculator to type on, rather
than click on each of the buttons? I was doing a rather simple
operation that I really could've, should've done in my head this
morning. I didn't feel like it, and besides I wanted to give this
calculator a test run, since I haven't used it before, and it
disappointed me that there was no edit box to type the numbers in.

Does anyone know a freeware app that can do this, or perhaps
Apple's Calculator can do it, I'm just not sure how to get the edit
box up?

Thanks.
