So when someone sends me a message, does the new window open and Voice Over
automatically speaks the incoming message? Finally are you placed in an edit
field where you can respond?

Adium brings up a new window when someone sends you a message. You should
also hear a sound, depending on your settings. Also, to send to someone,
just press enter on him/her in the contacts table.
