and then, when you get a message, you can VO left arrow once from the
edit field, and that'll take you into the message history table.
interact with that and you can read the message log. then stop
interacting and VO right arrow back to the edit field to type a message.

It isn't set by default, but you can have the system voice speak
incoming messages. You go to Preferences, and I think it's under the
Events tab or something. Also, you are placed in an edit field, and
you need to interact with it. You'll stay in it even after you press
Enter to send an outgoing message.
