JA: I was also wondering, does the scanner provide the accuracy, or is it the scanning engine? Do some scanners give better results than others, or is it down to the user and the techniques they use to scan documents.

SS: Well, a little of both really. definitely the quality of the scanner will impact on the resulting scan, however, if we're talking about black and white text, on regular paper the OCR engine is really more the determining factor. OCR engines generally don't require, or have much use for high resolution scans in order to do their job. Since a lower resolution is generaly used anyway, scanner quality isn't as much of a factor as it used to be. In my opinion, the real advantage that can be had with higher quality scanners comes more in terms of scanning speed, the ability to scan books with bindings, the ability to use a sheet feeder, that sort of thing.
