Look under system preferences/speech/text to speech. System events
refer to system wide stuff and refers to more than Adium. In
otherwords, you aren't really having a problem unless you don't care
to hear system wide information spoken.

system events for Adium. This includes who connects, who is idle,

When I use Adium I keep getting a message saying "system has new
system dialog." I seem to get this every time someone signs on
