OK I am an idiot. I can't find anything called text to speach anywhere.
I will keep looking under system preffs. I really jut want this
turned off in Adium, though it doesn't look like there's a way to do
this?

refer to system wide stuff and refers to more than Adium. In
otherwords, you aren't really having a problem unless you don't care
to hear system wide information spoken.
