I do have a suggestion incase it has not already been tried but I think it 
has.

Create a new account under accounts in system prefs.  Don't set anything up, 
plug in the display, turn on the Mac and see if it works.  If it does, we 
know that there is something going on with the software setup in the other 
account.

Yeah, about the only thing I can think of to do is to make sure you're
current with software updates.
