I forgot to answer the other question.  There are two ways to install an 
application depending on the application.  One way is through installer much 
like the windows installers.  The other way is to run the app.  Some of 
these will perform some setup and some will just run each time you launch 
them.  I put any app files in the applications folder but you can put them 
anywhere you like.

The installer files will default to the applications folder but you can 
change that if you like.
