Normally with a UPS, you simply plug the UPS in to the outlet, then plug the computer in to the UPS. Usually only certain outlets on a UPS will use the battery, so you will want to make sure the computer is plugged in to one of those. While software may come with some of these, it's not required in order for the UPS to work, it's just something extra.
