I'm using a UPS, and don't hook up the interface cable or use any software. With the cheaper units, the included software serves to alert your OS to a low battery condition, and with some models, to automatically save your work when the battery is low. I've never actually used this feature though.

On a somewhat related subject, I'm surprised someone hasn't come out with a battery pack for the Mac Mini. Maybe they have and I don't know about it, but it would seem to me that, since its power supply is external anyway, it wouldn't be that hard to design a substitute power supply with a battery pack contained within, so the Mini would, in effect, have its own UPS.

Subject: UPS with the Mac

Hi everyone!

I've heard of people using these devices with Mac's and it makes sense so here's the question, will the Mac automatically detect the UPS when its plugged in? If anyone is using one of these with your Mac then what experience have you had with the device, did you get a particular model because of your Mac and software compatibility issues, assuming of course that software of some description is used with these things.
