.mp3 files opening in quicktime instead of ITunes:

Hello All!

I went ot my nas drive and fired up an mp3 and it opened in quick time.  I 
know how to and have subsequently change this type to pen in ITunes, but 
aren't they supposed to do this by default?
This is on a leopard system.
