In most programs (and I don't just mean MS Office, I mean virtually any application with a "File" menu) the word "Properties" has nothing to do with count words. It's where you set up options for the overall program.
I would expect that *that* "Properties" entry would be some place other than the "File" menu. The "File" menu "should" have only entries that have something to do with files. If I see an entry called "File > xyz" then either the English term "File xyz" or "xyz File" should make sense. For example:
File > Save ----> Save file. File > Properties ----> File properties.
Yes, I *know* that applications don't really stick to this (e.g. Wizards, Exit). Oh well.
Two things here - I understand OOo is a unique program and isn't striving to be like everybody else. I also understand that any hint of OOo being a "MS Office clone" is a capital offense. However when every program on earth does something the same way - there is likely a good reason.
And even if there isn't, if that option is not worse than the alternatives, we should use it for no other reason than familiarity. If everyone expects to see "File > Exit", it would be *bad* to remove the Exit entry from the File menu and put it under a new "Program" menu, even if "logically", a "Program" menu would make more sense.
So yes, I agree with Chad. If a certain way of doing things is standard among all other applications, we should at lease evaluate whether we should do the same.
When was this evaluated. We are evaluating it now, and the only reason I have heard thus far to eliminate restoring view is that there are too many options, bad reason.
The only to eliminate the title is that people are confused. OKay reason, but better solution is to leave current behavior, or add an explicit option. If it is labeled correctly is shouldn't cause confusion.
Everyone program I've every used (and I have over 15 word processors or office suites that I play with and test) starts the cursor at the top of the document whenever you open it. That's normal. That's standard. That's what people expect.
That should be a setting :-)
Because having the document start where you left off can be inmensely useful. Especially for avid writers like me.

Gnome has an interesting way to approach this. Each application has a preferences window, but it's always very simple, very minimal. Only the 10% of the entries that 90% of the people want.
"But what about the other 90% of the options?"
The other 90% is still available, but it's well hidden behind a tool called "GConf". This tool has a massive list of every option imaginable. So the options can still be set, but they don't take away from usability.
