That possibility has always been there and also is in 1.1.2:
In the File - Open... dialog - select the file you want to open, then - select the file type to open as
For the second step, you need to scroll down in the file type list to see all the individual formats. You should do the steps in this order, as the file type selection also adds a filter to the file list to show only files with the registered extensions for this file type. Otherwise, to choose an arbitrarily named file after selecting a file type you need to type the name yourself.
Thanks, Joerg, but I am unable to duplicate the results you describe in the OOo 1.1.2 I have on my machine. OOo overrides my choice. I recall the same problem with earlier versions of OOo.
If I get the File->Open dialog up, I get four fields:
+ File name
+ Version
+ File type
+ Read-onlyEntering the filename/path and then changing the selection in File Type does not affect which program opens it. If the file has the extension .txt, Writer opens it even if a different file type is shown. If the same contents are given the extension .csv, then Calc opens it no matter what.
Being able to force an interpretation of a file would reduce or eliminate the need for difficult and usually incorrect autointerpretation.
