In general, I'd personally like to have OOo avoid repeating the terrible UI mistakes perpetrated (and perpetuated) by MS. Many, many OOo users are new to computers, so we have the opportunity for a fresh start.
If there is a published style guide for a platform it is good practice to conform to that as much as possible, in particular for a platform-specific feature.
In the current case the style guide probably was misunderstood (taken too literally) [and by non-native speakers].
