I wonder why people use word processors at all, if they are only
interested in the data.
In contrast to Desktop Publishing Systems, which can keep the text in a
separate file, word processors always force you to include the format
into the document.

Most of the files should work. You should expect that MS has done some
minimum tests.
But I can remember at a customer site we had an Excel file and after an
obligatory update of MS Office, some of the formats had been lost.
Unfortunately you couldn't view some of the data and it wasn't possible
to remove the format in the new version.
Since our customer is one of the fortune 50 companies in this world,
they simply hired some Indians, who manually recreated the complete
Excel file in the new version of Office.
I'm not sure if this is a bad thing though :-/.
