I think you and Chad take your personal experience too seriously. It is a fact that *basically* the file format of Word97 up to Word2003 is the same, there might be small differences, but I'm not an expert for this format, so I can't name any. Please note that OOo does not have different filters for those formats! (I don't know the MAC versions, so maybe this adds some more confusion.) If you create files with Word2003 and use some features that Word97 doesn't know you can't open this file in Word97 without problems. You can also get problems when you use some features in either version that for whatever reason treated differently in the other versions, either in the file format or in the application. In the worst case all the problems *can* add up to a disaster. So it heavily depends on what the documents contain wether old and new versions of Word are interoperable or not.
