Why do you have to upgrade to use OOo? NeoOffice/J - (the easy-to-install-Aquafied sister project of OpenOffice.org) - http://www.neooffice.org/ - runs on Mac OS X 10.2, and so does the harder-to-install-X11 version of OOo.
Either program should run on your Mac.
