Hi,
Please start a spin-off called OpenOS.org which will generate a free
OS that
works better than the other free OS's out there for all purposes,
including
fixing the real time spinlock problem on Linux, the inability to boot on
older IBM towers of Linspire, and of course the inability of Windows
to do
lots of things. I haven't tried all the Windows alternatives but I have
tried OpenOffice and it's way better than MS Office 10 by providing
the .pdf
export and the price is right so I won't be upgrading my MS Office.
Please
make an operating system that good.

OpenOffice.org has all it can do to improve and maintain what is IMHO
the worlds best office suite. OpenOffice.org is not in the business of
doing operating systems, nor is it ever likely to be.
I could say that "I feel your pain", none of the Linux distributions
from anyone other than Linspire include the drivers and codecs needed
for a general purpose home computer system. Linspire is propritary,
read "not free of cost" software, and the free version Freespire in its
first release has major problems installing on most systems. By my own
experience it fails to install on 4 of the 7 computers I have tried to
install it on. In a couple of cases it would install on some computers
of a single model and not others. It does not appear to be a problem of
inadaquate hardware, it will install on old Super7 systems and fail to
install on Socket A Athlon systems with more memory, better hard drives
etc. From what I have heard Freespire 2.0 Alpha does better in this
area, but it is an Alpha (not ready for prime time), and a Beta or
release candidate is several months off. So at this time there is NO
free-of-cost Linux distribution that can effectively substitute for
Windows XP. Windows Vista is too much of a hardware hog, and will
probably never be practical for basic PCs. So if you want anything
free-of-cost, you will just have to wait a few months for Freespire 2.0
A lot of people on this list will argue that this or that distribution
of Linux is great for home computers, but as far as I know, none of
them will play MP3s or DVD movies out of the box, and without these
capabilities, most people will simply not consider and distirbution of
Linux as suitable for a home computer!
PS: If you are into high end computer games, Linux probably will not be
a viable choice before 2010.
