Mac is a BSD clone. BSD is a variant of Unix. Linux is another variant
of Unix.

>nd because Sun wouldn't put in the time,

Sun has no experience in the Apple market. To gain competency in that
area, would require losing compentency in their current core areas.

where do the boundaries lie in this dual assertion, since if Macs are
essentially unices then Sun should be very comfortable in this area,
to be honest we aren't going to get to the bottom of sun's motives,
just I don't find it exactly shocking that they haven't directly
supported Mac's yet - linux/unix they are comfortable with and appeals
to the open source element, and windows is an essential portage.

I gather that macs are designed differently on at least deep enough so
that in order to design 'native' apps one had to use Apple's API's.
but that certainly doesn't mean:

A Mac is much more productive because
it isn't designed like Windows or Linux

can't really -objectively- compare between 3 competent platforms with
their own distinct (sometimes seemingly militant) user bases... Apples
and oranges really... :P

I'm contemplating whether to recommend NO or OO to a freind who's
'getting a mac' and from reading this thread the answer is
definitively... both
