This depends on the prospects of the ongoing(?) integration of hunspell
into Thunderbird. Before OOo changed to hunspell both applications used
MySpell. OOo is still able to support dictionaries in both formats but
IMHO it's unfortunate to continue that way. Once the situation has
stabilized we should work on shared dictionaries and especially on
shared user wordbooks. But that won't work without support from the TB
developers.

Agreed, for an integration that goes beyond bundling this is a must have.

Thanks for your suggestions. I hope we can see this happening in a not
so far future. Currently bringing Lightning to release quality is the
first step towards an integrated PIM.

For the integration steps I hope that we can get developers from both
projects involved.
