I would vote for having Thunderbird go to Writer whenever you hit the reply button so that you would have all the features and power of Writer available. A send button would be in the Writer toolbar durring this function, and anything that couldn't be handled in an email would be greyed out. As soon as you hit send, you would be back in Thunderbird. Except for having the send button on the toolbar I don't see that any other changes in the GUI are really required.

Features and power doesn't nessisarily mean complex formatting, more like Writers good spellcheck system, word completion, undo, etc. plus I like the way text entry appears on screen with Writer better than the way text entry works in Thunderbird. As I said, things that are not appropriate for use in email would be greyed out or simply not shown.

Personally I have a preference for plain text mail only.
Formatting overloads my mail-box, and the more formatting, the more problems with replying, forwarding etc. (in my and others' mailboxes)
If formatting really adds something to the content, I use an attachment.
