Thanks for the info. The only problem is that I need to actually be able to check the documents out. Its setup to work through CRM (another Microsoft Product for account management). I get a total of three options; left click allows for opening the document in read only, or checking the document out, right click gives me the standard IE "save target as" option. If I do not use the check out option, I can only upload the file under a different name. I could still make do with this, if I had the ability to remove the old document. Unfortunately, a large majority of our company believes in Microsoft as the only solution, so using an alternative to SharePoint as a whole is not going to work. I was really just hoping that OpenOffice might have come up with a plug in to "trick" SharePoint into pointing to the other app, in this case scalc.

I have to use Sharepoint 2003 at work. It is possible, but fiddly, to use OpenOffice.org to edit documents stored in the portal. Opening the document should be OK. To save the document, you'll have to save locally (say to the desktop), then re-add the document to Sharepoint. There are some Sharepoint alternatives being created (most notably O3Spaces, http://www.o3spaces.com/). I hope this helps.
