Ian,
Ron explicitly said that it is not him but his correspondents, who use
MS Word, who have the problem.

General comment about using OpenOffice to produce and keep around
files in proprietary format: please remember that doing so completely
defeats the most important reason to use OpenOffice, which is to
guarantee complete ownership of one's own files through the usage of
the OpenDocument file format. See the slideshow I linked to in my
first answer. I'm perfectly aware that there are cases ("the boss
wants it") where one has no other choice, but it's true nonetheless.
Even more general advice: please limit your signature to (many) less
lines than it is now, trim as much as possible of an email before
replying to it (*) and after that put your reply _below_ the original
text. There are plenty of reasons why this is still very valid
netiquette these days, explained in too many places to link to them
here. Following this advice (at least on public mailing lists) will do
nothing whatever to hurt your communications but maximize the number
of answers you get in the long run.
(*) if you don't trim list messages, you make all people who have a
metered internet connection pay twice for bytes they already got from
the list. Considering that, even in Western countries, many more
people every year switch to non-flat-rate mobile/wireless
connectivity, and you'll understand why not trimming won't help you to
be any more popular on any mailing list.
