Missed the seeing the header but it does make sense. Given this then, how would anyone become subscribed without knowing. Even if some unscrupulous individual initiates a subscription for someone elses address, they still have to respond to the confirmation to complete subscription.
That being said, the one thing that seems to be missing form the list(s) via Collab.net/mailman is the option to disable receiving list e-mail while still remaining subscribed.
