Anyway (OT, sorry): I guess there is some kind of server managing this
list, right? Wouldn't it be possible for the server to recognise non
subscribed users and automatically reply back to them that they need
to subscribe and so on? Such an email could even contain a link for
the user to click on for an automatic one-click subscription (plus
confirmation). This would solve this problem for good, wouldn't it?

Yes, of course - in principle.

I think one of the problems is the lack of unanimity among list users about the best action. A significant number (at least, over on 'users') believe that allowing unsubscribed users to post is a good thing. I happen not to agree, but the issue is certainly debatable.

Another of the problems is the apparent sheer rank stupidity of just a few people, who seem totally and utterly unable to follow instructions even when spelled out in the minutest detail. Believe it or not, there are people who would be unable to respond to such a mail as you suggest. (Quite a few months ago, iirc the 'users' list was mail-bombed by a user who had somehow(!) managed to subscribe, could/would not follow the unsubscription instructions painfully spelled out multiple times by other users, and resorted to 'e-violence' to get their way; if I recall, their ISP had to intervene in the end. Rare fortunately, but shows the mentality of some.)

Maybe two lists are needed - one for subscribers only; and one where non-subscribers can obtain help, where only the most patient of the 'experts' hang out, and who are prepared to respond to the sender alone, not a list.
