Or maybe we should just replace all the OpenOffice.org lists by an
OpenOffice.org forum instead. That would solve several problems, one
of them would be that some users don't like to receive hundreds of
messages every day and another one that it seems to be too hard for
some people to unsubscribe. Maybe new problems would occur too, on the
other side.
I very much dislike web forums (or is that fora? :-)
A certain UK ISP is about to move all its support from private usenet
groups to a web-base forum. It's raised a lot of squeals from those who
frequent the groups, with complaints ranging from security to ease of
use by the visually handicapped.
I certainly have never found /any/ web-based scheme to be as easy to use
as usenet. email lists rank about the same in ease of use as usenet imo
(unsurprisingly, probably).
I wonder though - given that gmane already gateways these lists onto
usenet, might it be worth considering abstracting, in the best
structured computing tradition, the various functions associated with
the list. So some sort of central messaging repository would be accessed
by any of web, usenet or email list interfaces. Then casual users would
probably use the web interface (looking only for a quick solution to
their problem), while the more experienced would use usenet or a
subscription-only email list. Best of all worlds???? Does anything like
this exist anywhere?
