If he's running a certain product, that we need not name, in place of a
mail server, then he's used to lost messages and hasn't given it a
thought yet and will try again next week. ;)

But what are the chances he would try that? You're starting with information

There is also an archive at the OOo site:

Yes, but I've looked at trying to use that (especially for any follow-up
posts needed) and it's really ugly. So far, nabble is looking good.
With the list software the way it is, non-subscribed users should be
blocked from sending messages. If either of you file a bug report, and
post the link here I'll vote for it. But it should just be a matter of
finding list maintainer and having him check the right boxes.

That whole boxing match has been fought over and over again, and
nobody's gotten a TKO yet -- and I doubt there will ever even be a clear
decision. What looks best to me at this point is for somebody to send
the unsubscribed user who initiates a thread a message explaining how to
follow the thread. We should be able to agree on that message, and make
it automated (at best) or readily available for use in a response (at
least). At least initially, I think we'd also need a single message for
that thread to the list saying that the explanatory message had been
sent, and that no forwarding, cc'ing, or whatever was required. There's
already a sort of self-identified team watching out for these folks
(Harold most notably), and maybe in the absence of automation that could
be somewhat formalized so we could eliminate even the notification to
the list.
