It appears to be impossible to contact Oracle unless I am offering money.
How do I register? Perhaps the question should be "Do I really NEED
to register?"
I thought registering would help the community in some way or I
wouldn't bother.
Thoughts on any of this?

You never need to register; just say "never" when asked.
What sort of account did you try to create? You don't need an account.
You don't need a password. You don't need to contact Oracle; as far as I
know OOo is still supported by the openoffice.org mail lists.
Registering has never required an account or password. Are you sure you
are using a "genuine" version of OpenOffice.org downloaded from
www.openoffice.org ? There are companies out there who *sell* software
and require registration even though the actual software is OOo and the
companies point there customers at us for support.
