Shawn, I started to offer some of that info but thought twice (some say my
emails are too long) so I removed it. So since you're asking...:-)

If folks don't mind I'd rather point to some blog entries I did back in 2002
where I discussed the pros and cons of the J2EE sessions. I know you're
asking why anyone would stick with the old form, but really, others may
equally ask why they should switch to the new. Or they may have tried and
had problems (which does go to your question)

In the entries, I explain the differences and even at least one gotcha
(relatively rare) in using them that I don't think has been resolved.

FWIW, I also did a CFDJ article around the same time with some of the same
info, perhaps arranged differently:

 <http://cfdj.sys-con.com/read/41646.htm>
http://cfdj.sys-con.com/read/41646.htm
And I shared some of what I added in the blog entries in the "feedback" area
of the article as well: http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/read/41646_f.htm. Just
haven't reviewed that info for a while to see if the article and comments or
the blog entries have all the same info, or which would be more
authoritative of what I'd observed.)

Hope it's helpful.

I guess I don't know why anyone would use the old session variables anymore.
I always use the J2EE session variables instead. Maybe someone can enlighten
me to the any benefits or trade-offs of either choice.

Just to clarify, this isn't something you can do at the application level in
CF8. I was under the impression myself for a while that we could do pretty
much everything at the app level now, but it's just mappings and custom tag
paths. Perhaps in a later release. :-)

So, no, the J2EE sessions mechanism is a one for all and all for one sort of
thing (unless of course one runs on Enterprise and creates another
instance).
