Thanks to both you and Ken for responding. I figured I was going to have to
end up buying CS3. It's hard to justify the cost when all I want is a single
frame swf image, they should consider a scaled down version of flash for people
like me. As for other products like SwishMax, going through all the red tape
for approval is not worth it.

I'm using swf images for their vector properties. I put in a zoom in/out
feature on my flex app and the swf image objects are the only ones that keep a
clean line.

As for the SWFLoader, I never considered using it. I built a class that
inherited from the Image class and point it's source to the swf image file
location. I assume the SWFLoader is more for swf files that have an actual
timeline? All my images are single frame although we might consider an image
with action later on.

Subject: Re: [AFFUG Discuss] Flash 4 .swf vs. Flash 9 .swf Mystery

Tommy,

Loading non-Flash Player 9 SWF files into a Flex 2/3 application is often very
wonky because the Flash 8 or lower file gets loaded into a different virtual
machine (AVM1) than the VM that Flash 9 content is loading (AVM2). Generally
speaking, those two VMs do not speak to one another.

If all you are doing is converting the images to Flash 9 SWFs then you could
follow Ken's advice.

My question to you: Why SWF? Why not keep the files as JPEG files?

Also, how are you loading these files? Are you using Loader? SWFLoader?

Well I would think that some functionality would more than likely be missing
within the swf provided by Corel not only because it was created by Corel
(non-adobe) , but because Flash added much more functionality then what is
stored in flash 4 with its most recent version of flash player (flash 9). You
may want to consider buying Flash CS3 or downloading SwishMax2 it also offers a
trial download and I believe it uses the most recent version of flash player.

Subject: RE: [AFFUG Discuss] Flash 4 .swf vs. Flash 9 .swf Mystery

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear enough. My flex app compiles into a swf app that
uses flex 9. In the app I have a stick figure person image that is also a swf.
There are two different stick figure swf's, an original version that according
to the properties requires flash 9, and a Corel Draw stick figure swf person
whose properties says that it requires flash 4. Both stick figure swf images
display correctly when I run my flex app and the context menu I built for those
images displays fine as well. The problem is that the original stick figure
(flash 9) fires the context menu events correctly but the Corel stick figure
person (flash 4) does not and I can't figure out why. I'm attaching the two
swf images. The Person.swf is the Corel Draw (Flash 4) swf and the
PersonBlue.swf is the original (Flash 9) swf. Is there prehaps some kind of
setting that we need to adjust for the Corel Draw image?

If I'm not mistaken flex will only work with flash player 9 and that could
be part of your problem.

Subject: [AFFUG Discuss] Flash 4 .swf vs. Flash 9 .swf Mystery

Here's one for you Flash guru's out there. I'm building an interactive map in
flex and I'm using .swf images. I built a few .swf images by downloading a
flash trial, importing the image into CS3 Flash Professional and then exporting
the image as a .swf object. I don't have any timelines, it's only a simple 1
frame image. Now my trial version has expired and we are using Corel to export
a .swf image. The absolute only difference between the original swf and the
corel swf is that the original swf requires flash player 9, the corel swf
requires flash player 4. The problem is that when I change the context menu
items for the image in flex, the context menu comes up correctly for the corel
image but the context menu event doesn't fire. It never gets to my handle
event function. The original swf worked fine. Is there a problem with my code
in that I'm not handling a Flash 4 .swf correctly or is this an issue with
flash 4 swf vs. flash 9 swf themselves?
