Personally I would love to see contribs developed further but I'm not sure reinventing the wheel is the right way forward. I guess that I really wish that Filippo had thrown his resources behind the current project.
I've used SME Server personally for a number of years, and have installed it at 2 of my clients (a third one is/was due to have it installed in a couple of months). I've made some small donations financially to contribs, but I admit that is all.
The beauty for me is that it can be used for very small businesses and run by non technical people. All of the competition that I've looked at need some form of techie to get the thing set up and keep it running. The business that I work with don't have the budget or the interest in that. If I have to do server stuff for them once a year it is unusual, mostly it just works. I'll add that I don't charge a monthly fee for maintenance, only charging if I need to do work, so it isn't a big money spinner for me by any stretch of the imagination.
I totally understand why development has stalled, and am sad to see things that way. If I win the lottery next week I'll make funds available, I promise ;-)
Like John, I am now a bit wary. If the project is forking, then I will have to start looking elsewhere (especially if I'm going to need 16GB of RAM to run the fork on), at least until such time as things get sorted out.
Could I also suggest that a discussion thread be opened in the forums, as not all people who may have an input will be members of the lists?
