Quoting John Crisp <[email protected]>:
To make SME 8.1 happen, get the commitment of someone to roll the needed
ISOs. Currently this has been Shad, but the needed scripts are available to
all.
Once the commitment is there then the rest can follow.

Go on then - show me how :-)

The scripts are in CVS, needs someone to try and then write it up.
It's not something I have done in recent times.

I think we need a better method of stating required jobs and finding
volunteers to commit. I think there are a lot of people out there who
would be prepared to help but need to be given specific tasks rather
than just saying 'go find something to do on the bug track'. Not
everyone is a pro developer (I am a perfect example of a complete
amateur at all this) and I think we need to try and give as much
specific guidance as possible.

80 bugs waiting for verification - I cannot get any more specific than that. I've made a page for it and its linked from the forums
http://wiki.contribs.org/Verification_Queue

I intend to make a similar page for the Troubleshooting, that may not be as pretty.

I really think that these are the two main areas to concentrate on.

Maybe we need to expand the section on current tasks here and make it
more specific :

http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server_9.0_Development

Yes, more can be added now that SME Server 9 is fairly stable. I was surprised at how well it works. So I'll add more later today and others can help - or see below.

Do we have anything similar for v8 ?

What we need for v8 and v9, is a guide to testing. Essentially step through each page in the server-manager and try everything, and check the logs.

It would be great if someone could step up and create this.

Somehow we MUST get a bit more organised. If not we will end up
duplicating effort and wasting our precious time and resources, or even
worse, nothing will get done at all.

I would prefer the effort going towards finding and supporting new
Troubleshooters including verification.
I have not yet seen duplication/wasted effort, but where we have serious
problems are lack of troubleshooting of incoming errors, and virtually no
verification of fixes. Chris has done an amazing job in this area but more
community people should be there helping.

Agreed - I think we need to have the information in place for people to
find and work on - I had someone on IRC today who was asking 'what can I
do' and I would have liked to have given them more specific work.

I hope you pointed that person to the verification page, I look forward to the number going down.

On a related note I have started to create a list of 'easy fixes' and if someone wants to work on those please contact me. That's a Devinfo topic so I'll continue there.

Ian
