Hi Tony, I did something similar some years back but gathered the data automatically through the contribs I have published (Sme-unjunkmgr and Dansguardian-stats). If you want to show something that anyone can be proud of then the entire volume has to be there - otherwise you will only show a dying distribution :-)
I created the Google map based in the IP address for the server that provided data and I guess that you could do the same if you have access to some central SME (contribs.org) logs. This would I my opinion be interesting to see the actual install base and its location.
