As we no longer have SMOLT ...
Is that correct? My server still has smolt enabled and there is a boot time
message about enabling the monthly smolt checkin. Looking at the config of
smolt it points to smolt.contribs.org.

I note the comment by Jean-Philippe over in [devinfo] about the server
having trouble installing on centos 6 though.

To be able to better serve our users we need to know more about them.
This is true. Maybe I have misinterpreted what Tony was doing. I got the
impression it was a purely manual collection of data volunteered from those
already known to be using SME Server by virtue of being in these lists or
forums. ie "self selected" which is nearly always going to produce a very
skewed data set.

If smolt is still working or can be kicked into doing so, perhaps Tony can
assist with the presentation of the information collected by it?

The history of SMOLT can be found in Bug 6639 - Smolt '500 Internal error'

After the recent outage that took the wiki, forums, etc offline, smolt never came back up.
Browsing to http://smolt.contribs.org/ returns:
500 Internal error
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.

The problem isn't with hosting a smolt server. It is with getting it to run. There isn't any documentation on running one and the directions for setting it up on a el5 didn't work on el6. I've not had time to investigate why it doesn't work. If someone wants to try setting up a smolt server I'd love any help I can get. As far as pointing at fedora's smolt server, we can't do that. We've customized some of the things that are reported and it would mess up their database and stats if we did.

It may be worth going back to this bug, there is a lot of information, in particular from Greg and JPP. SMOLT could possibly be resurrected?
