Hi Jonathan,
nice to see you back around.
I have been around, although laying low and will be around and every
now and then chime in with my meaning, ideas etc. although I can not
dedicate the time I did before at the moment.
Fair enough and you've mentioned that before. Nevertheless, good to have
you around.
The 'Test Internet Connection' in the console app 'phones home' with
data. Let's take a look at that.
Problem is that this is manually run, but we can easily device a cron
job or the like for it.
Yep, or at a 'opt in or out option within the installer, 1 time off
I personally think that the data submitted should only contain:
a. Install date
b. Version
c. GeoIP location
d. Unique installer code
I think that would be a goof enough starting point, to which I hardly
can think there would be objections.
Agree. I believe it would respect most if not all privacy laws on all
continents and respective countries
regarding d. When using a virtualization platform and 'cloning a VM'
this unique code will not change...
That could be easily solved by genetaing a unique id based on hardware
charachteristics. IDs of NIC/HDs will most likely not be the same.
This coul dbe taken as a salt for genertaing the UID IMHO.
Right.
Let's see if other readers voice their opinion.

Kind regards,
Jonathan
